Healthier Light in Psychiatry

Circadian Lighting, Therapy Light, and Coloured Light

The psychiatric bed rooms

Both the patients and staff at psychiatric institutions experience advantages from LIGHTCARE full dynamic circadian lighting. Daylight simulation is automatically adjusted – without any interference – from morning to late afternoon. The light strengthens the patient´s mood in a positive way. Sleep patterns and generally well-being is improved by the lighting scenarios from LIGHTCARE. At the same time the light can affect the job satisfaction, the efficiency, and the staffs´ absenteeism.

Patients with different diagnosis typically react in a positive way on coloured light. Several examples show positive results in behaviour with patients when the light is changing. The staff have manually the possibility of changing the colour of light in every section or bed room – according to which preferences the patient has.

Calm and secure environment

Light should not be a method to treatment but as a solution which can contribute to more comfortable and calmer environment. The light can create more pleasant environment for patients and help to reduce the level of conflicts between patients – but also amongst patients and staff. The staff can there by also experience increased safety at work. The light can be customised the need of the patient e.g. a specific colour which can have a calming effect on individual patients.

Blue colours often seem stimulating, are good at reducing sleep impulses, and increase the level of activity. Red light calms and often reduces aggression and anxiety. Magenta colours enhance contrasts and are good at daily routines.

Luminaires from LIGHTCARE are secured in the ceiling, so patients can not do any harm to themselves or others during aggression or anxiety attacks.

COMMON ROOM

Circadian rhythm lighting for patients and staff

The circadian rhythm lighting in the sections and common rooms create a calm and pleasant light minimizing the risk of aggressive behaviour of patients. Blue colours often seem stimulating, are good at reducing sleep impulses, and increase the level of activity. Red light calms and often reduces aggression and anxiety. Magenta colours enhance contrasts and are good at daily routines. The light can be customised to the patient that has a specific colour they like or a colour they think makes them calm.

The solutions of LIGHTCARE have many different advantages in psychiatry:

  • Adjusting the level of conflict and aggressive behaviour
  • Reducing the level of stress
  • Positive impact between patients and scale down the level of conflicts
  • Positive impact on the patients
  • Reducing the possibility for conflicts between staff and patients

CONTROL ROOM

Central operation of the lighting

The light can be operated from central guard-rooms, the staff can change between different lighting scenarios like emergency light, light for cleaning, and light adjusted to sensitive patients. The light can be operated in individual rooms and common rooms. The patients can turn the lights on and off in individual rooms, but the patients can at the same time choose between circadian lighting, coloured lighting or a light sensitive scenario. In the offices the staff can experience that the circadian lighting can help during night shifts. Studies have shown that the staff find it easier to fall asleep after evening or night shifts compared to when working under regular white lighting conditions. In offices the staff can experience that circadian lighting can help them to get through the week better.
